Description:
Congratulations to our winner. River Forest resident Pat Blevens.
Remember the historical amount of rain that fell in just a weekend, this last September. Homes and roads flooded. River Forester, Pat B was out of town, enjoying her godson’s wedding in England. Her flight landed at O’Hare Monday afternoon; the road trip from the airport to her home on Lake Street one block east of the river took over 3 hours. Pat arrived home in the dark, her neighbor greeted her saying, “Your cats are safe, but it’s bad.”
The sump pump overloaded and Pat’s family room furniture was floating in six feet of water, her extensive cook book collection destroyed, multiple generations of family photos albums lost and oddly a box fan sitting high in the room was still running. Pat with no flood insurance, living alone, and in her sixties was overwhelmed; she didn’t know how she was going to recover from this. She did know, retiring anytime soon was not in the picture.
Quickly, Pat discovered how wonderful her friends, neighbors and community are. When Pat called her boss to say she wouldn’t be making it into work, his wife came over to help. A friend cheerfully took her in for three weeks and a neighbor eagerly shared his contractor. Friends, neighbors and even community volunteers helped - clear out her loads of ruined personal effects, remove molded flooring and walls and even bleach the foundation. It was her friends that entered her in our contest.
These days, Pat continually reminds herself of her good fortunate. She is appreciative for the kind and helpful people who surround her. She is thankful the boiler only needed repairs and not replacement. She is joyful to be in her home again, with the possessions she does have. When she does feel disheartened she considers those still homeless from Katrina, she relates to their sorrow…takes a breath and again counts her blessings.
